Barclay Mowlem LHD Bridge, Stanwell Park
Principle contractor: Barclay Mowlem in conjunction with the NSW RTA
Scope of works: LHD Bridge Launch Nose and Catwalk Assemblies
Allfab Constructions Pty Limited were contracted to supply, manufacture, surface treatment, delivery and installation of the launch nose and catwalk assemblies that were used as access for the existing road to the new head stock structures.
This included the supply and manufacture of the closure casting frames, support steelwork for the hanging of scaffolds on the head stock structures, installation of hand railing to the pedestrian walkway.
The launch nose assembly was manufactured from grade 350 plate and consisted of two fabricated beam assemblies that were held together by a series of pipe diagonal braces.
The launch nose dimensions are 16.5 meters long x 2.3 meters high tapering down to 600 millimeters, when assembled the width was 5.5 meters and the total assembled structured weighed approximately 60 tonnes.
The beam sections were manufactured from an array of different thickness materials. All sections were welded together by the G.M.A.W process using 1.2 diameter solid wire. Welds completed were 10 and 12mm fillet welds for the flanges to web assembly and full strength butt welds for the joining of the plates when changing material thickness. All welding personnel and procedures were qualified to ASNZS1554.1 SP 2004; all fabrication, welding and quality assurance documentation was completed to the RTA QA specification B204 Welding of Bridges and Other Road structures.
Allfab Constructions managed the off site painting of all components to comply with the RTA QA specification B220.
